What Is a Seed Phrase? (And How to Store It Safely)

A seed phrase (also called a recovery phrase or mnemonic) is 12 or 24 random words your wallet generates at setup — the master backup from which every private key in that wallet is derived. Whoever holds the phrase controls everything in the wallet, forever. It is the single most important secret you will ever own in crypto.

What it actually is#

When you create a wallet, the software generates a seed phrase per an open standard (BIP-39): 12–24 ordinary English words in a fixed order. Those words aren’t a password to an account — they are the wallet, mathematically. Your NFTs never live in the wallet app; they live on-chain, and the seed phrase is the complete recipe to regenerate the keys that control them. Lose the app or the device, the phrase restores everything. Lose the phrase and the device, everything is gone permanently — no support desk can reset it.

Where the danger lives#

  • Anyone who sees it owns your wallet — pasting it into a website, Discord DM, or “support form” is how nearly every NFT wallet drain happens. No legitimate service will ever ask for it.
  • Digital storage is exposure — screenshots, cloud notes, email, password managers synced online: anything connected to the internet is attack surface.
  • Physical loss is the other half — a phrase only on one phone is one accident away from gone. A phrase only on paper is one fire away. Real backups are redundant and offline.

How to store it (the honest checklist)#

  1. Write it on paper or metal, offline, twice. Two physical copies in two safe locations beats one fancy one.
  2. Never digitise it. No photo, no Notes app, no cloud drive, no typing it into anything except your own wallet’s recovery screen during an actual restore.
  3. Test the restore once, carefully. On a fresh wallet app (or a second device), verify the phrase regenerates your wallet before trusting it.
  4. Treat any ask as an attack. “Verify your wallet”, “claim your airdrop”, “support needs your phrase” — all scams, always. The only place a seed phrase is ever typed is into wallet software you installed yourself, during a restore you initiated.

One habit worth more than any product#

The majority of NFT losses aren’t protocol hacks — they’re seed-phrase social engineering. The defence isn’t a gadget; it’s the rule above: your seed phrase never leaves paper except into wallet software you deliberately opened to do a restore. Everything else is convenience traded against irreversible risk.

Next step: the detailed storage guide covers backup methods in depth, and choosing a wallet comes before any of this matters.
