How Much Money Do You Need to Start with NFTs?

You can start with NFTs for the cost of gas fees alone — under a dollar on some chains — or you can spend thousands on a collectible. The honest answer is that “starting” splits into three very different activities, each with its own real price of entry.

Activity 1: Learning / free collecting — effectively $0#

Setting up a wallet costs nothing. Plenty of legitimate NFTs are free mints, event collectibles (POAP-style), or low-cost items on low-fee chains (Polygon, Solana, Base) where a gas fee runs cents. You can own, receive and even mint NFTs for under a few dollars total. This is the correct starting point: learn wallets, marketplaces and scams while the cost of a mistake is negligible.

Activity 2: Buying a typical NFT — budget ~$20–200#

Most mid-range NFTs — art pieces, game items, membership passes — trade in the tens-to-hundreds of dollars. On top of the item price, budget for: gas (the transaction fee — pennies on Solana/Polygon, variable dollars on Ethereum mainnet), possible creator royalties, and marketplace structure. The mistake to avoid: putting most of a budget into fees chasing a cheap item on an expensive chain. Match the chain’s fee level to the purchase size.

Activity 3: Collecting blue-chips / investing — the risky end#

Famous collections have historically priced at thousands to hundreds of thousands of dollars — that’s a different activity entirely (speculating on scarce assets), not “starting.” If that’s your goal, the honest frame is: only money you can afford to lose entirely. NFT prices are extremely cyclical; most individual NFTs are illiquid and many trend toward zero. This guide is about entry costs, not investment advice.

The hidden costs people forget#

  • Getting crypto to pay with — buying ETH/SOL on an exchange has fees; moving it to your wallet has more.
  • Gas variability — the same action can cost cents or $50+ on Ethereum depending on network congestion (see what gas is).
  • The mistake budget — approve a bad contract or buy a fake and there’s no refund. Starting small isn’t stingy; it’s the standard onboarding path.

The honest minimum#

For a genuine, low-risk start: a free wallet, ~$5–20 of crypto on a low-fee chain, and one small purchase to learn the flow. Everything beyond that is a choice about how much risk you’re willing to take — not a requirement of entry.
